Shopping Bags
Now, I have a confession to make....
I have been a little too slow getting on the reusable shopping bag band wagon. Yes, I have bought them, but neglect to remember to bring them with me when doing my groceries. I can feel the stares and my face reddens in shame! Yesterday I was in the queue at my local supermarket where the people in front of me didn't even use bags for their vegetable purchases. I waited as the register assistant sorted out their vegetables one at a time to weigh them on the scales. The people in front of me were doing the right thing and yes, I had forgotten my reusable shopping (canvas) bags again!! I think this may be the last time I forget. A song popped into my head from one of my favourite Australian comedians - Tim Minchin. He sang this song as the grand finale of the 2006 Melbourne Comedy Gala. I laughed so hard at the time but the message has certainly stayed with me. We thought we would share Tim's wit and environmental consciousness with you! Unfortunately, there is a small amount of bad language in this clip but it is well worth it! (please don't open around children)
As a result of my new "Canvas Bag" awareness, I have been browsing through Etsy and wanted to share some of the gorgeous bags I have seen. Don't forget about all the beautiful handmade products available to us all through Etsy. If I don't get around to sewing any shopping bags I will definitely be shopping here.
In order, these shopping bags can be found here, here and here.
Off to sew some shopping bags! Rosie. x x

Thank, Rosie, for including my birdie bag! I've not been very good at rememebering to take cloth bags when I shop, either - but I'm trying! I think we are all slowly becoming more aware :)

Yeah handmade, Yeah reusable grocery bags. The Aussies have been doing it for years. I am only just starting to see increased availability at markets in the last couple of months. At the end of the day if I HAVE to go to the market/shops I want to look dang good doing it. Etsy, Etsy!!

Hi Rosie, thank’s for being aware of the bag-thing and I’ve seen the clip at Live Earth on June 7th, I love it. In Holland you can buy big reusable bags at the supermarket, they will last for years and years. Most people use them. Lots of people thought for years that you could better ask for paper bags than plastic, but paper bags are the reason complete woods dissapear. I always use my Stop Aids Now bags. They can be bought at a big store in December and have beautiful art on it. I think we are doing quite well overhere. You’ve put lovely bags from lovely people on your blog!

LOL!!!!! That clip is hillarious! I just realized that we bought reusable ones from Trader Joes (I always put them back in my car after unloading so I have them) but I don't use them at the regular grocery store where I buy the most food. Need to do both! Never thought about making my own. Thanks for the inspiration!

The video clip was great, I really enjoyed it, it was very clever and yes my canvas bags are always in the car...maybe we could design a canavas bag that filds up quite small so that I and other dog owners could get the dog to carry them on his leash along with his poo bags! Interesting concept!

Hi Rosie,
Ah, we love Tim Michin. Since you've posted that clip I've had the song stuck in my head all day... except, for some silly reason I've got it stuck WRONG. I keep singing "Take your plastic bag to the supermarket". I didn't even realise until my husband pointed it out!
Thanks for your fun and inspirational blog, both of you!

Love the video!! Here in Denmark, you have to pack your own groceries, so forgetting the bags means you have to load your cart back up with unpacked groceries and wheel them out to the car! Then they get to roll around on the back seat until you get home!! LOL! I have a wicker basket which I "almost always" keep in the car, along with canvas or recycled plastic bags. Plastic bags cost a fortune here, so most people recycle. A good thing! I very much enjoyed reading your blog! Thanks! Mary Ann in DK
