Not to plan.

The last week has just been one of those weeks!  You know the ones where nothing goes the way you had imagined and nothing gets done to plan.  It seems like all of my good ideas have had to be scrapped and that all the things I had wanted to get done just haven't happened.

It started this time last week when I received a package in the mail.  I had hoped that the package would be the fabric I had ordered to make 3 of my nephews' Christmas presents.  I looked at the package, saw the company logo and realised it was the fabric.  I had spent hours looking for the perfect prints and was so excited to finally have them.  I opened up the package and guess what??, there was fabric in there but it was certainly not the fabric I had ordered. OK, there goes 3 of my "handmade gifts" to the "have to buy" list!!!!

I then had a mixture of other mishaps in the form of a playing up sewing machine, a day of sickness, tooth pain which turned into a root canal, more terrible storms with me panicking and waiting for the house to flood, late night wake ups etc etc etc.   OK, there go another 3 gifts from my "handmade gift" to the "have to buy" list!!!

So I had to give in and spend a night at the shopping centre!!!  It was pretty painless and quiet but I still felt like a bit of a hypocrite after all of my declarations on here and to my family and friends that I simply was not going to enter a shopping centre!

It is now afternoon here, the mailman has been and there is only 1 more day of mail delivery before Christmas and guess what??  The handmade gift that I bought through Etsy have not arrived!!  I ordered them two and a half weeks ago thinking that this would be plenty of time for delivery but I guess I was wrong...... Please mail man be nice and don't make me add another 3 presents to the "have to buy" list with a last minute dash to the Shopping Centre on Christmas eve??!Picture_076

I also managed to get NO Christmas themed sewing started or finished. I have put this picture of Rudolph here to pretend that I did, even though he was made about 6 months ago so that is a bit of a stretch!  I did however in the previous weeks get a few gifts made up and am happy to say that at least 8 people will definitely be getting a homemade gift.

That is better that none I suppose and we can hope that the Etsy purchases still reach me in time.

I decided today, amongst all of these happenings to stop worrying about Christmas.  No matter how much I worry about the shopping, how many gifts I made, late mail, illness etc etc it will still always be a beautiful time.  Once the shops are closed and the clock ticks over it doesn't matter what I managed to get done or not, it is all about sharing precious time with those that I love and I know this will be a blast no matter the circumstances.

So that said, I decided to look into the new year and just start sewing!!!  Not sewing that I had to get done on a schedule, not sewing that I had to go and buy materials for, not sewing that I needed for any apparent reason, but sewing "just because"   I feel like making a bundle of softies over the next few weeks and enjoying "just because" sewing.  They will probably find their way to the Etsy store since that has not been restocked in months, but maybe they won't, It doesn't matter, I don't want to give them a purpose but just enjoy them.  I started today with some Mrs Perkins' and here are their yummy skins!Skins

I look forward to stuffing them now over a few cups of tea while I relax and look forward to a beautiful festive season. - Melly

Activity galore

When we found out that we would be going to Quilt Market in Houston we decided amongst ourselves that we would use July to concentrate on a few new designs before starting preparations for our big adventure.  As a result there is a bit of design fever going on as we try and come up with some cute new items to add to our catalogue.  The next goal will be to make a bundle of samples for "sample spree" and organise a gorgeous display for our stand. Rosie headed off today to enjoy teaching at a fabulous "Christmas in July" retreat in Nundle - I am very jealous of the crafty weekend she will have but will make sure I use my time at home wisely!!

Dolcetto_2I think I may have a bit of a "Christmas in July" at home myself as the time seems right (after a little prompting - thank-you Emma) to start working on some Christmas designs for Melly & me.  So back to the pencil and paper I go to wait for inspiration. - Melly.

My Christmas bliss!

With all the children off at their other parent's houses for Christmas day, DH and I woke up at 1:00pm and had a spa bath until 4:30 pm - Ahhhhhh bliss.  There was champagne, chocolates, music and candlelight.  We felt justified in filling the spa bath as it was pouring with rain and had been for the past 36 hours.  After such amazing rejuvenation, it is no surprise that I wanted to spend the evening crafting.  We had a boxing day party to attend and I decided I needed a new handbag for the occasion.  I decided I wanted to crochet fabric strips into a cute bag - the only problem was I didn't know how to crochet!  I found a vintage magazine on our holiday with a one page tutorial on crochet and off I went.  About 6 hours later I had this cute bag (modeled here by my gorgeous, slim daughter)101_0276

I love the bag so much that I have spent the morning at a local haberdashery buying crochet hooks in many sizes.  I will be playing with this idea for a long time.  For anyone who is interested I used a size 8 crochet hook and 1" strips of patchwork fabric.  Until next time, may the floss be with you, - Rosie.

Time for rest

101_0036_2 I have officially dubbed today "a day of rest" for me and my poor overworked sewing machine.  I have been working on one project or another every day for what seems like an eternity but have decided I need to kick the habit for one day and just have some R & R.  I have posted two pics of some of the work Rosie and I have been doing over the past few days - Christmas trees are due up this week so no more time for delay in getting some decos finished.  I have also worked on a Fishy Flossie for our new swap partner in the USA (cannot be revealed on this blog until she has received it to save the surprise - so watch this space!) and some very cute cushions for my home.  But for today I am going to enjoy some time outdoors in the sun with a good book (it is such a glorious day) and I think that series one boxset of Grey's Anatomy that Rosie let me borrow will get a good watching.  I hope you all find some time to rest today too!  I also wanted to thank you all for your comments and emails - we get a real lift from your feedback and are really appreciative of all your thoughts and ideas. - Melly 101_0046

Its coming......

Christmas is already so close it is scary!  I have been madly trying to get a lot of my present shopping done now so that by the time our holidays come along in December (YAY!) everything is done and paid for.  Went to the shops this morning and only managed to come home with 3 gifts so have decided that I may need to let my creativity out of its "too busy" box and start planning some home-made gifts.  So much at the shops seems the "same as always" and I would love to give some really original gifts this year - who knows I may come up with a "Melly & me" design along the way.  So now rather than braving the shopping centres I will go and have some me time in a patchwork shop and kill two birds with the same stone - sounds much better!! :)  I am looking forward to getting behind my new sewing machine a lot in the next few weeks now that I have managed to clear some backlogged work from my schedule.  Look at these gorgeous linen Christmas angels that Rosie has made - they are so cute!  I need them for my tree. (I'll have those in return for that bag flossie!! - ;)  If you love them as much as I do you can grab some on ebay in the next few weeks. - Melly.
